Meet our Instructor - Fred Schlosshan
After eight years of teaching experience at Chattanooga State, Fred became a driver education teacher at Haman's New Drivers in June of 2001. He began teaching classroom and in car training for new drivers of all ages.
Soon he began and completed six months of training with Tom Haman in the area of evaluation and training of the handicapped and those with special needs. Since 2006 he has worked exclusively with driving students with special needs.
In 2008 Haman's New Drivers and Mr. Schlosshan accepted a request from Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation to partner with them and their staff to do driving evaluations and training to help those with special needs live more successful lives though better mobility.
How do I get started?
Our Prospective Handicap Driver Questionnaire is very helpful in determining the right program - please fill it out and give it to us so we can design the best program for you. If you are under a Physician's care ask for a prescription for Driver Evaluation - (This is helpful but not a complete must in getting started). The Evaluation consists of two phases. The first phase is in the class room where a series of PSYCHOPHYSICAL DRIVER TESTS are given as a PRELIMINARY EVALUATION in preparation for the BEHIND - THE - WHEEL EVALUATION. The Psychophysical tests help identify potential problems that will need special attention during the Behind - The - Wheel Evaluation and IN-CAR TRAINING (if it is required.) We have found the tests to be highly beneficial in individualizing the training program to the specific needs of the client. At the conclusion of the tests a written report showing the results, with pertinent comments and recommendations, will be provided the client. This is a confidential report and will not be given out to anyone else without the written permission of the client. If the Psychophysical scores are favorable for driving then the BEHIND THE WHEEL EVALUATION IS UNDERTAKEN. Upon completion of the IN-CAR EVALUATION we again give a Confidential, written report, with pertinent recommendations and an estimate of the cost of any training recommended. PSYCHOPHYSICAL DRIVER EVALUATION COVERS the following: Visual Screening -- Visual Acuity -- Eye Motility -- Distance Judgment -- Field of Vision -- Color Vision -- Night Vision -- Glare Vision -- Glare Recovery -- Hand Simple Reaction Time -- Foot Simple Reaction Time -- Complex Reaction Time (eye - hand - foot coordination) -- Motor Coordination -- Hand Strengths & ARM-HAND Mobility -- Feet & Leg Strengths & Mobility -- Upper Torso Flex & range of motion -- Sample Law Test to determine need for Tutoring (in preparation for written or oral driver's test)
